Grassroots Donors Flex Big Muscle

Grassroots and small dollar donors shattered fundraising records with $100 million raised for Kamala in less than 36 hours. The record-breaking surge of donations came in the wake of President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not seek reelection, instead endorsing Harris for the 2024 presidential race.

The Harris Campaign reported Tuesday evening, the campaign had raised $81 million in the first 24-hours– the largest amount raised in a 24-hour period in presidential history.

Over 880,000 (60%!) grassroots donors who contributed were making their first contribution of the 2024 cycle, and the Harris campaign added 43,000 new recurring donors. That’s astonishing and really underscores the power of small-dollar donations for Democratic campaigns.

Our unique position in the Democratic digital communications space lets us answer some interesting questions. So we wondered: Is this translating to a spike or “surge” for Democrats down ballot as well? So we put together anonymized, aggregated data we have from 75 candidates in our client base (a mix of senate, house, gov, with a few AGs and locals all over the country), and sure enough, based on what we’re seeing across our client base, this spike in fundraising appears to be across the board from an energized and mobilized Democratic base eager to impact the upcoming election up and down the ballot.

The average daily raised for the 12 days preceding the Biden announcement was $440k. Over the next three days there was an average daily raise of $920k with a total raised of almost $2.8 M. That’s roughly a 210% increase compared to the pre-Biden announcement daily fundraising average.
